While investigating a minor leak from an exhaust rocker sideplate I noticed that the tangs on the sideplate were not engaging with the rocker spindle, there also apeared to be enough slack for the spindle to freely rotate cold. I have no intentions of taking the head off for a few months and am probably just going to shim the spindle to bring the end flush with the end plate. I suspect any wear will be in the ally head supports. Anyone tackled this issue?.

Hi John, The spring washer…
Hi John, The spring washer (to my knowledge) does not load up the spindle and should make no difference even if missing, my spindle is either too short or has bored its way into the head , a packing washer should bring it flush again and allow the tangs to engage. I have read of a few bodges to tighten the spindle in the head, center punching the ally, sqeezing the ally to bulge it a few thou, making o/s spindle and reaming the rocker bearing, locktite. As the parts don't rotate even a bit of feeler gauge may work (yes horrible bodges).

Sorry Robert, brain had slipped out of gear! I was thinking of the spring washer, on the spindle, which bears on the rocker (which always tries to slip out, as you replace the spindle!).
Although the spindle should not rotate, hence the tangs, it should not be a tight fit into the head, making fitting/removal more difficult. Your idea, of a packing washer seems the easiest, and most simple solution.

Are you sure the spring washer, on the inner end of the rocker spindle, has not broken up?
