Hi, gave me bike a run around found the gears a bit difficult to engage when warm as i have heard described before gives a false neutral it seems to hang inbetween gears then move the gear lever it selects a gear . when i got back i wondered what could be causing it so had a good look at it checked the primary chain tension its like a guitar string very tight would this have been why the gears were difficult to engage. not run it as yet to try it since adjusting it. its a laydown box in my es2 cafe racer all the linkages are free gear lever selector spring renewed, oil level ok. another thing i noticed with engine running on its centre stand the back wheel gained a lot of momentum as though it was in gear which it wasn't. As Gordon says, it is best to adjust both chains at the same time. First the primary ( make sure there is some slack in the rear before you start). Slacken the chain, then adjust to the correct tension. Then, tighten the adjusters. The last movement should always be pulling the gearbox forward, so there can be no slack for it to be pulled back under load.

When you adjust the primary chain tension - or to be more accurate, slackness, make sure you tension the rear chain whilst doing it. My method is a boot pressed on the bottom run of the rear chain. Don't walk straight onto a white carpet after this. If you don't, the increased force transmitted by the rear chain will tend to pull the gearbox back and take up any slack or movement in the adjustor and you end up with a twanging-tight primary chain.
