Piston slap?

Forums

My ES2 has loads of compression, goes really well and starts easily (when you know how). BUT, on tickover, just as the engine is about to stutter to a halt, there is a slapping noise, a bit like a loose chain from the motor. The mag chain is at right tension. I was wondering if it could be piston slap, it does it hot or cold, but I always thought piston slap was what you might expect from a worn engine, which mine is not. I'm not unduly concerned about it, just wondered what I was hearing. Any thoughts?

Hi Adam, if the maggy and primary chains are OK, and push rod tappets are set correctly, the slapping noise is probably the piston, as you suspect. Generally nothing to worry about.I run my piston to bore clearance at .006" and it is a little noisy, particularly when cold. Also, to run an engine too slow isn't advisableasthe power pulsehammers the clutch dogs and the back lash in the cam gear wheels adding to theengine clatter.

Thanks Paul, that's reassuring. I think I'll up the tickover a bit so it's less prone to 'chugging' on slow tickover.
