PEN WASHERS FOR CRANKSHAFT END FLOAT

Forums

Dear Members,

I am currently rebuilding the crankcase/engine of my 1960 ES2 after suffering a drive side roller bearing failure. Everything is dismantled and cleaned and new bearings have been bought from the club.  Conferring with my Norton manual P106/P it says that I should aim to achieve an end float of “.005 and to fit pen washers if float is excessive, spacing them evenly so that the flywheel remains central in the case.

I have been searching to buy a selection of the pen steel packing washers, listed as part number 11770 in my spares book PS214 but am unable to find a supplier or indeed know what thicknesses are available.

Can anyone in the membership give me the name of a supplier?

Dont Know if they will be any use but I have used Commando ISO shims for the gearbox after I openned out the Bore.

Dear Members,

I may have made a mistake in the part number listing (11770) because that is, I believe, the washer that sits between the crankcase casting and the outer face of the bearing.

There is another washer listed as “Mainshaft bearing crankcase washer driving side”, part no 22680. Unfortunately neither of these items are illustrated in the engine exploded view.

Norton specific parts are not required. As long as you know the dimensions of the required washers you should find what you need, in a range of thicknesses, from on-line suppliers - just search for shim washers. If you measure the end float on your crank now you can work out what thickness you need, but buy a variety anyway, they are not expensive. I sourced camshaft and gearbox shaft shims from ebay suppliers during a recent Matchless rebuild.

Dear Members,

I have just realised that the pen washers I seek for arriving at the correct end float on the crankshaft are available in the club's spares shop at various thicknesses.

Embarrassing mistake on my behalf!
