Paint stripper on fibreglass

Hi all, I want to respray my Commando side panels. I want to remove the old black paint prior to re-painting. The panels are glass fibre - will paint stripper (Nitromors etc.) damage the panels?

Cheers,

Mark Woodward

Mark,

Nitromors is now based on methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) and although I haven't tried it, I am fairly certain MEK would go for the resin component of fibreglass. At a minimum it will soften it and slightly swell it at the same time.

You could try a test patch on the inside where it doesn't show and/or use it sparingly so that you don't let the solvent contact the material, finishing off with some abrasive paper.

Mark, if they have previously been painted then simplyrub them down and repaint. However if they are colour impregnated then the colour goes right through the fibre glass and cannot be removed. Again simply rub down and repaint.

Unless you know the materials you are using, or have a spare sacrificial side panel then I would avoid chemicals or take the parts to a specialist. HTH.
