How do you intend to do the painting?- the colours you require are Black and Dove Grey. There are all sorts of Dove Grey shades- British Standard is BS381C-694, Ford did several shades and the Transit Dove Grey is a different colour to the Capri Dove Grey, or the current favourite is the RAL1013- used by the powdercoaters. It is best to give your paint man a sample to compare to colour cards and ask what he can supply.

2K is the best paint but remember it is poisonous to spray and you need an air-fed mask. Cellulose or 1K is non-hazardous to spray but is poorer quality and can react. Water based needs proper drying equipment. etc . Or you could contact one of the specialists supplying aerosols but remember an aerosol will never give a proper depth of paint and will only be 1K.

(1)2K paint is restricted to agricultural and industrial use only. It is not allowed for use on motor vehicles so a paint supplier will not supply 2K without a declaration of use. So the paint supplier will only supply 2K in Standard colours - he will not mix the paint to a vehicle paint code(or he shouldn't).

(2)Cellulose is still available but is only allowed for use on 'Classic' vehicles. It can be mixed to vehicles codes but most Motor Factors don't want to know.

(3)Water Based paint is now the norm for all bodyshops.

So consult the paint man at your local Motor Factors and see what he can supply.

Try this firm, they say they can supply paints in the following ranges, RAL, BS381C, BS4800, BS2660, BS5252 and Pantoneand have colour charts too. Theyprovide 1K and 2K in 400mil aerosols and touch-up pots. Never had anything from them but as I've been trying to findthe paint code for myDomi 99 that was produced in a 'special' black and whitecolour scheme as I'm led tobelieve. It seems these guys have something that is a very close match to the white used on the mudguards and bottom quarter of my tank

Hi John,

Cellulose is a good choice as it's user friendly and can give a superb finish but it can react with old paint- so prepare well. I have just painted a Jubilee De Luxe and I used the British Standards version of Dove Grey BS381C-694. This is noticeably greyer than the RAL1013 shade which I used on the Navigator De Luxe a while back. So I have used both shades. Ask for some colour cards and make your own choice-it's your bike.

I have a family of doves nesting in the garden here and the BS colour is unquestionably the correct colour match if you are repainting a dove! A dove painted in RAL1013 would definitely be classified as a 'foreigner'.

Thanks Barry I have used them in the past, it`s just I have a paint shop just round the corner from me , Found a tiny bit of paint left on a small part of the bike, The ral bs381c was a good match,

off white not dove grey, so that will do.

The Spare Parts List Jubilee 1959 lists the paint ;

Synthetic, air drying enamel is available in the following colours;

Dove Grey, Red, Tunisian Blue, and Forest Green. Small tins 1/2 pint tins 1 pint tins 1 gallon drums.

The person who probably knows better than anyone as to the correct colour of Dove Grey is NOC's Andy Sochanik. Generally the people doing the specialist aerosols are only selling expensive paint and have little accurate information on odd colours such as Norton's Dove Grey so they supply whatever keeps the customer happy.
