Forums
Would to install An oil filtre while keeping the oil feed on top Gear. I have also a Big oil pump(from à commando) ,should i set th Big ol pump with three start Gear or change to plain rockers (and six start)This is for a model 7I m sure this subjectif has already been raise but can t fondThanks

Hi Bernard, I have tried the 6 start gears on a 99 and have returned back to 3 start but with slightly modified rocker feed . Much happier and no problems. I would think the big pump and 6 start would give you problems in many areas, over oiling, mag problems ,oil airation, breather blowby.power loss, plug oiling, rapid pump wear, oil leaks, bearing cavitation damage, ---still interested?.

Since the oil filter installs below the tank and below the rocker feed pipe I don't see why there would be any change to the oil flow. I would install the filter and then check the oil flow to the rocker feed pipe and make a decision based on that experiment.

On a Triumph 650, I installed a filter in the return line between the tank and the rocker feed "T". I made up the rocker feed "T" with a very small bleed hole and the head still gets plenty of oil. It is less intermittent. This is not the way the Model 7 is set up though. I would also experiment with moving the Model 7 rocker feed below the filter as I did with the Triumph but you will have to restrict the flow.

I think the Commando pump is a separate issue altogether unless your old pump is badly worn. I can only suggest things I have actually been successful with.

Hi thanks for your answer, but could you let me know more about your modification,Roy Bacon in his book restoration said that a slight change has been made around 1953 but can t find how it looks like.

However will keep the oil feed type with three start but with big pump reason is because i have one in hand in good condition

Another query ,for the rocker spindle (scrolled type) should the hole face the rocker cover or be opposite as on commando?

Hi Bernard. If you are using the big pump this will supply more oil than the system was designed for. I would check how much oil is getting to the valve areas ,It may be fine, but if too much on the inlet side it may not drain fast enough so a non scrolled rocker spindle may help. The exhaust side will probably be ok . Have a look in the valve areas after a run. Some bikes run a bit dry so the extra may work out well. If the areas are dry you can increase the flow by restricting the tank return however with the big pump this may result in the oil building up in the engine and not getting back to the tank for a well earned rest!. The pump feed side drillings may need enlarging to suit the big pump ,its possible to get bubbles in the oil which can cause cavitation damage to the shell bearings.
