Norton Navigator handle bars

Forums

Hello!

For originality?s sake:

Is a handlebar with welded lugs for the hand levers correct for a Navigator?

Like this one?

I don't know the answer. If you really want to be precisely correct you would be best advised to contact Andy S as he knows more than anyone about Navigators. The 1959 Jubilee had handlebars with welded on lever brackets and it also had welded on mounting lugs for mounting on the Francis Barnett style forks. I think around about October 1960 the Jubilee handlebars changed their design keeping the welded on lever brackets but changing to more traditional fork mountings and still using FB style forks. So these bars might be close to correct even though they are listed for a BSA Bantam

The Navigator always had the Roadholder forks from October 1960 but possibly did use SIMILAR handlebars to the Jubilee as the same part number is listed for Navigator/Jubilee brake and clutch levers in the 1961/62 Spare Parts List. Navigator handlebars though had a different part number so they are not identical to the Jubilee bars of this year.

Dominator bars are much better. Norton straights were always the right image.

Ulrich,

The bars you show in the photo are not correct. I took original bars off my 1964 Navigator and they are welded on brackets but not like the ones in the photo.

It is too late at night to go out to the garage and take a photo but I will do it tomorrow and put it up here.

Also got to agree with Norton straights - that is what I have bought.

OK, got out to garage. The photo is of the handlebars and levers I removed from my 1964 Navigator. They are shown in the 1964 Norton instruction manual that came with the bike so they are correct.

I put a tape measure beside them and also a set of new stainless Norton straights from the Club spares scheme.

Hope this helps

Hello Crawford!

Thanks for the picture.

I bought the same straight bars from the NOC shop and will use it with bolt on levers.

Hi, when you are next in the garage can you measure the gap between the pivot and centre of the nipple on the clutch side? Thanks

It will be interesting to see Crawford's reply re the Navigator's handlebars . Here's a picture of the 1959 Jubilee bars which seem to have a very similar bend to the Navigator but have the welded on mountings. I make the pivot to centre distance 0.875 (7/8") on these.

Thanks Patrick, that explains the heavy clutch action with 1.25 centres, I bought a pair of Amal replicas that have a 7/8 gap and will fit those!
