Norton Jubilee engine strip

Hi i am stripping my engine for a check over and to have the engine cases vapour blasted, i have stripped it down as far as the crank and one half of the crankcases, i have a problem as i cant seem to get the crank out of the timing gear side case, i have the cams removed and the oil pump, and the oil pump drive gear, the left hand thread one, should the crank now press out. There is a gear behind the oil pump drive gear, but it look as if its fitted via a woodrough key to the crank.

Any help would be very welcome.

Do you mean the half-time pinion gear? I've never stripped a lightweight twin but on the exploded diagramit looks as if the h-t pinion is like a Dommie's in that it needs a specialpuller to remove it. (I thought you said you had a parts list book?) The lightweight's manual(105P) says to use extractor "ET 2003". Incidentally, the manual that covers both light and heavyweight twins isn't as good for the lightweights as 105P - as you might imagine. That's a dedicated manual for Jubilees and Navis. I bought Bruce Main Smith's photocopied 105P just afterI bought the Navi last June. I have an original combined manual, which I bought in 1966, but it misses out some lightweight details - like the pinion extractor! It was fine for my first stripdown of my 1959 Dommie though.

I'm not too far from Norman White (40 miles)so I took my Dommie timing side crankcase to him (with crank attached) and he removed it for nothing! It wasn't a special trip as I had work up that way on the A303. Don't try using levers whatever anyone says! It's supposed to be a tight fit so you would need to be worried if it wasn't. With the extractor it's a 5 minute job max!

It was Norman who recommended where to get my crank reground and barrels rebored locally. By coincidence I found a good place for stove enamelling that he also uses! It's almost on my doorstep and when I first visited I spotted a Dommie barrel that had just been painted. I asked about it and found that a) they had stove-enamelled it and b) it was for Norman White! I had my frame, S/A and a few cycle parts stoved there. I'm not a fan of powder-coating and the long-term plan is formy Dommie to be Concours anyway!

Hi Lionel, i have the book that covers the jubilee, navigator and electra, there isnt to much on the 250 engine, there is a page that shows all the special tools, there is one list as the timing pinion tool, listed for all the models, looks like this is what i need, it has three flat bars at the end and a centre nut, i cant see how it grips hold of the pinion gear, god knows where i will find one of these, not likely to find one on the Isle of Man. If you could send me a copy of any parts of the manual you have i would appreciate it.My Email is alvin@manx.net

On a good point i have most of the dzus fasteners sorted, i have had a quote reply but they dont have all the sizes in, i need 2 x A6x60. I will call them tommorow and see if they are expecting them at any point.

hello kev you can get a timing pinion puller on ebay for 34 pounds, and as for vapour blasting I think its not the best idea as it may do damage too the cases and the oilways you are better of with a mild acid like rhubarb juice ??? it sound daft but it works ??

hello kev when fitting bearing to the Cases its best to put them in the oven and get them warm up first ? you find they go in better, And do the same when you need to get them out, In the oven for 20 min on full ? You can do the same with the valve guides to but have Valve Guide tool there a specal drift if, you can not get one then you will have make one on the lathe ?

Hi thank you for the advice, i have great success with the vapour blasted cases, even as expensive as a vincent engine. I think if you take your time with some small drill bits and compressed air they can be cleaned fine, i have no chance of my wife letting me use the cooker, i use a good heat gun, the bearing always drop in and out. I havnt got as far as checking the valve guides, if theres a small bit of moverment in the guides they will probably get left.

As Anna says, an extractor will cost you at least £34.95 - eBay currently has the cheapest. It's not worth buying a tool like this that you'll only use once in a blue moon so it makes more sense to take it to your bike shop. There must be plenty on the I.o.M.!It's only a 5 minute job. There are thin projections at the 'bottom' of the 3 legs which slip behind the pinion. (see pic below or on eBay if it doesn't display on this site). There's not really an option here.

Unfortunately my manual 105/P is in paper form only - a reduced size photocopy from Bruce Main Smith (former Norton racer of course!). It means I would have to scan in any specific parts you want - the complete manual is not an option as it's about 25 pages of A4! You'd have to let me know what areas you want. I have the original parts book in pdf format so pages are easy to send by email.

I'm still puzzled as to why you needed a quote for the Dzus parts. All the prices are on their website. Postage is a prob I suppose? Has to get there by rowing boat I expect! LOL!! Incidentally, although the A6-60 are listed in the parts book, I found I couldn't use them. All mine needed A6-35s.

It will not work in its current form, as it does not make proper contact with the triangle washer fitted behind the gear.

Maybe its for another make? My pictures will show how to amend it so that it works on a Norton (Jubilee OR Dommi).

In its present form, it will simply ride up over the gear, as it does not locate properly behind it.

Hi All (first post..)I'm a member of the NOC and am currently stripping down the engine of a 250 Jubilee. Ithink I have similar issue to the posts by kelvin in that ican't get one of the gears off the end of the crank.
