I have finally tracked down the source of the very loud “ drowning/ whirring noise on my 16h. It is the new half time pinion that came from India. I have tried several timing gears on the exhaust side and they all make the noise when in contact with the half time pinion - it is easy to hear just using the kickstart. I have it fitted with the “dished” concave side inwards - is this correct?

Did you mention ...
... that you'd fitted an Indian-made pinion? I would steer well clear of anything which is so vital unless I was sure of its provenance. Failure could cause catastrophic damage. There must still be genuine pinions about. Norvil list them although at a pretty hefty price.

There should be a hard washer behind it. Easy to lose, especially if the shaft is loose. If so, check recent posts about which way up it goes if you loctite it.
