New kid with Inter question

Forums

Hello all !

My name is Arne and I joined up yesterday.

I have been lurking and reading the forum for some time and have found it very interesting, sometimes very entertaining and sometimes very funny.

Now I wonder if I could tap into this wonderful mass of expertise ?

My question is regarding Featherbed Inters.

Are the engine plates for 30 and 40 F'bed Inter different or are they the same ?

Regards

and a very happy New year to all !

Welcome to the club Arne

I have no idea about the engine plates, but I am sure someone will be able to help, (I am a model 50 type of guy!) albeit in a slimline featherbed, I would guess they are the same, as the crankcase may be common to them both, but I don't have a definitive answer.

Once again welcome to the Norton fold.

Thank you for kind Words !

The thing is. I do not think that 30 and 40 crankcases are quite the same. Very similar yes, but not not quite. Bolt hole pattern may

be identical and this is what I need to know.

Hopefully with a litte patience this information will surface.

Looking in the parts list for the earlier plunger models, I see different part #s for the 30 vs 40 engine plates, front and rear. A surprise to me.

Happy New Year again to All!

Hi Arne,

The model 40 crankcases are physically smaller ( about 1/2 inch all round ) than the model 30 ones and the mounting holes will be correspondingly closer together. This also applies to the magnesium Manx engines prior to 1951. The only similarity are the 2 5/16th inch holes at the bottom which are a left-over from the Garden Gate era and registered the different engines in these earlier frames. If you are fitting an earlier engine into a featherbed frame there are subtle differences between them and the later engines to facilitate fitting into the featherbed, although this is not such a problem with a 350. Thank you very much, that was exactly what I needed to know.

My reason for asking is that after having put together four cammy engines I am left with enough parts to what seems a good start on the fifth. This will be a "special"with a set of 1949 model 40 crankcases in a f'bed frame.

It is now painfully evident that on order to do this a set of particular engine plates are needed.

My next question will then be: does anybody out there posess a set of such plates and if so are you willing to let me have a drawing ?

Regards

Arne
