A little advice please.
I discovered upon stripping down/rebuilding my 1961 standard navigator that the footrest spacers had been replaced with a couple of sections of cut down box spanners. Full points for initiative I supppose.
I therefore bought a couple of new parts from the club spares shop.
On fitting them however (and connecting the exhaust pipes) I discover that the footbrake lever strikes the exhaust pipe.
Firstly, should the exhaust pipe fixing be to the inside or outside of the space? (A photograph would be great).
Secondly, what length should the spacers be?
I am confused.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Sholto,
On my 1961 Navigator Standard the exhaust fits on the outside of the spacer. It's difficult to get a measurement of the spacer without removing the footrest and pipe but my best effort gives 57mm or 2 1/4 inches). The brake pedal only just clears the exhaust.
Did you check the Norton Spare Parts List -this sometimes gives measurements ?.
Patrick.

I'm having similar problems on the brake side. I have an original header which is as close as I can get it to the frame without rubbing - I've made the spacer a little under 2.25 inches. However the brake pedal is still rubbing at the limit of its needed movement, and I have to pull the silencer out to avoid missing the rear brake actuating arm.
Mine is a late jubilee and I'm trying to fit a pair of brituro cigar silencers (from the club) does anyone have a late model they can take a couple of photos of, from behind, on top and side on?
Does anyone know if there were any changes to brake pedals between early and late models to reflect changes in silencers?

I have two at 2.3", one at 2.05" and one at 2.08".
I bought 2 sets of footpegs for my Electra and they both came with these two sizes of spacer. The Electra has a stainless steel bracket that fits on the brake side

Bit of hole in your chain case there Andrew! Mine had a bigger one that I mended very well with one of those aluminium solder rods. Thanks for the pics (Andrew and Ian), I notice that I am also missing the brake lever stop, I wondered why it was so high!

Thanks for pointing that out, I had not noticed. Have not got down that far... Indicates a bit of an adventure there I think, this bike seems to have had a few, quite a learning curve.

The chain cases are often damaged, if you drop the bike the footrest can hit it and cause the damage.

Thanks you for the offer but I'll cut down the oversize piece that I have to the lengths you have provided.
Or at least I shall try..............

Hello Sholto, What size wa…
Hello Sholto,
What size was the oversize spacer you bought from the Club shop ?
According to the Spare Parts list for 1959 and 1961/62 both left hand and right hand 'footrest rod distance tube (outer)' should be the same - they have the same part number 21129. This fits both Jubilee and Navigator and is the same part number listed in Club spares. Possibly the Electra might be different as I think it had the later silencers.
Could i suggest that you send a polite email to Ian or Neil at Spares just in case they have a stock of wrong size spacers - I think the website showed they had 49 in stock.

I'll measure it and get back to you.
I have to say it didn't occour to me that the issue might be the exhaust pipes (as in electras having different styles).
My bike has lead a varied life (to say the least) being used at some point for production racing I think and with its fair share of 'non standard' adaptions..............

For what its worth I am currently fitting a pair of Brituro silencers (from the club)to my Jubilee, getting them to fit so they don't foul the brake pedal and kickstart is a little fiddly, both of my spacers are non standard, but I've had to reduce then to get the necessary clearance. I've made sure that the headers run as close to the frame as possible without touching. But I'm still worried the kickstart will clip it, its very close.
Sholto don't worry about alterations, any bike that's 50 years old is going to have been altered in some way or another!

Gents
Didn't get a chance to do much this weekend due to other pressing matters but did manage to check the lengths of the spacers.
They are 2.1/4 '' or 58mm (depending on your preference.
'll next check if the kickstart strikes, something I hadn't considered.
