Navigator chaincase front fixing to swinging arm

Looking at two top rear chain cases to go onto a delux and standard navigator they fit and line up with the nearside front fixingon the swinging arm good [its slotted] but the back of the chain case or inner section near the tyre has a oblong section cut out on them both and looks the same and original yet the swinging arm has a 1/4 stud for fixing on the inside,[still at the front]am I missing a part or has both the chain cases been butchered , the parts book shows the swinging arm with studs/ washers/nutsboth sides at the front. Any help appreciated, thanks Arthur.

Hello Arthur,

Old age and butchery plays its tricks.

Originally your chain guards, or chain cases, would have had the same fixing detail at the front, inside and outside. A slot at about 45 degrees and 1/4 ins wide. The swinging arm (top, front, nearside) would have had a U-shape flat section welded onto it and the chain runs through the U. On each vertical arm of the U-section a short stud 1/4 ins was welded facing away from the chain.

To remove the chain guard one removed a through bolt, on the top of the swinging arm,near the rear of the chaincase. This passed through two opposing holes in the chaincase.

Then, the two nuts on the studs at the front of the chaincase were loosened, and the chaincase could be pulled up and back to freedom.

The inner front nut is very difficult to reach. Both nuts tend to corrode onto the studs and then the studs tear away from the U-section when loosening. Take care if replacing a broken stud with a nut and bolt. The chain runs very close to the sides of the U-section and may rub into a bolt head.

Thanks Peter, I repaired one of the swinging arm studs to match the other and can repair one chain case that needs the flat section of the u strap extending as it still needs shot blasting dents knocking out, unfortunately the dove grey one for the delux is in its paint and it was this one I was fitting. I may rivet a small cover plate to it on the outside with the appropriate slot, probably they were both butchered years back because as you say the inner nut would have beenhard to get to, thank youfor the clarification Arthur.
