Mudguards

Forums

Hi Mudguards on the Dominator, I have seen painted and chrome; then hinged rears,  ridged rears with deep lateral ridge, and smooth rears all deeply valanced, then "thin"  sporty chrome rears.

Fronts, I have seen exaggerated big "C" fronts, smaller "C" fronts and Sporting chromed fronts what's the deal with dates and I presume protection from the elements is afforded by the more deeply valanced types.

The type with the hinged tail were on Dominators in 1955 because I had one.  They had side valances fitted too.

Although some detail of the shapes changed over the years such as the curve profile and side valances, Dommies had them until the end of Wideline frame production.  After that they were one-piece.  The hinged tail piece changed to detachable up to my own current Dommie of 1959.

Others in the NOC will be able to give the year changes and profiles.  Front mudguards varied in detail too but mainly in the depth of the valances as far as I know - but my experience only dates from my earliest 1955 Dommie.  They also should have a raised flute pressed into the front centre of the guard.

One of my projects is to tidy/clear my shed and workshop which will mean finding things I had "lost"!  I have new reproduction mudguards for my 1959 99.  When I get there I'll take and post photos.

The rear is a particularly good copy, except for the way the side valances have been tack welded on but the front is made by Fred Williams and is pretty good, although the radius is a little tight.  He also makes them for another well known Norton parts supplier.

Thanks Lionel, I have around, six or 7 mudguards, 2 black big "C" shape 1 x   5 inches width, and a matching one slimmer in width, a ribbed, ( Triumph I think),  front mudguard a smooth Dominator rear, a chromed Dominator front and a steel Dominator front for rust treatment and painting.

An important thing I forgot to mention is that Norton date-stamped their rear mudguards at least.  I have my original rear and it's dated "JUL 59".  My bike was first registered to Taylor Matterson in JuIy 1959 so was hot off the press!  I bought an NOS tailpiece a few years ago and it's "AUG 59".  My original intention was to mate it with the repro rear mudguard, front section, but it's not a great fit.  I may well sell it one day - along with many other bits and pieces surplus to requirements!
