Mudguard bridge query

Forums

I am after a mudguard bridge for my 1947 Model 18 which is fitted with long roadholder forks.

On eBay there is a mudguard bridge for SHORT roadholder forks, will it fit my Model 18?

Hi Ian, I dont think these are the same, they look similar but I think thery are different lengths. I havebikes with long and short roadholdersto compare so will measure them for you tomorrowand postmy findings.

Thanks for the feedback. The measurements for the long roadholder bridge will be really useful (if different) as it can't be too hard to knock one up. Mind you, getting the steel over this festive period could be a bit of a pain. I need to "escape" to the calm of my shed soon ... too much family I think ;)

Hi Ian, Iâve had a rough measure of both bikes and to my surprise they are very similar. So I got out my parts books:-1947 book - Centre Stay B2/6801950 book - Centre Stay E2/6801959 book - Centre Stay 19282 (Superseded No. L12-2/680)1961 book - Centre Stay 19282 (All Models)

Iâm not sure what this tells us, except there is a possibility that they are the same as the 59 parts book which covers only Featherbed frame models (therefore short roadholders) states the superseded part number, which is very similar to the old range of numbers from parts books covering Long Roadholder forks. Is there someone else out there with any other ideas on this? Possibly someone with these items removed for comparison?

hi ian i have been meaning to reply to your query for sometime i can never remember how to log in i dont know why we cant use our current membership no i assume your forks have centre bridge fixing studs one above the other and not side by side like the 1950 onwards forks i have my 1947 mod 18 in bits so could draw round the bracket and send it to you it should be quite easy to make as it is just a piece of one inch x one eighth steel strip and not a pressing like the later ones my phone no is 07917334214 or e mail roger_deadman@yahoo.co.uk

Many thanks for your reply and offer of a template.

However, as my forks have side by side fixings I now assume that they are post 1950 vintage.

The mudguard bridge on eBay is item number 370569862060, I have contacted the seller requesting dimensions, but alas ... no reply.

It looks as though it would fit, but .......

Thanks for all the feedback.

I have spent a very enjoyable couple of hours in my shed making a suitable bracket which does the job a treat.

Not original of course, but then nor is the bike.

I must say it is really quite a treat to be more relaxed about restorations when working on a bitsa. My 1927 16H is 99% factory original (One previous registered keeper before me) and thankfully very reliable ... touch wood, cast iron or any other material that's handy !
