Magnetic plugs

If you want a magnetic oil drain or sump plug you can buy a massive range of sizes and types of neodynium magnets on eBay.  I have been using them for years and they are stuck all over my steel workbench and racking units!

They can come threaded or with a hole in for fixing to things, but a suitably sized one will stick like you-know-what to a standard gearbox or primary case steel drain plug - no need to buy a special one.  If you aren't convinced by the strength of its magnetism (easily tested) you can always cement it in place with Araldite or similar.

Another useful location is in the big sump plug - even though they are normally non-ferrous.  Get one big and thin enough to fit under the gauze filter, but if in doubt do the same as before.  You can drill and tap the plug for easier drainage and use a plain setscrew/bolt with a magnet on rather than a magnetic one.   You might already have a suitable size in your workshop.

Good thinking, Lionel. I do worry about getting my watch too close to one though...and the more of them there are scattered around the more the chance of  lose contact. I've no idea if it might matter.
