M18 rocker box screw

Forums

Hello.  1947 Model 18.  The bike sounded like a steam engine the other day, and I've tracked the noise down to a missing screw on the rocker box.  It's not shown on the drawings in the parts catalogue, so I'm hoping someone here can help.

Looking at the offside of the rocker box, there is the plate which covers the pushrods, which can be removed for adjustment. This is held on by 2 screws.  Either side of these screws are two more screws which go directly into the rocker cover.  One of these is missing.  Any description or part no. would be very helpful.  Thanks in advance

You are only missing one of the 1/4" screws similar to the other 5.

Attached is the rocker box off my 1947 Model 18. There should be 5 screws holding on the alloy cover and 2 holding on the inspection cover.

Check that the thread is not damaged by taking the other one out and ensuring that it tightens home when screwed in where the other screw is missing.

Might also pay to check that all 4 rocker spindle nuts are tight at the same time.

Philip,

Just a slight clarification to my post. (Done too late at night!!). Posts can't be edited any more by the poster after being posted now for some reason.

There are 7 short screws (1/4" x 1 1/8" long  Whitworth thread) and these just bolt the removable cover to the rocker box. There are 2 long screws (1/4" x 2" Whitworth) which attach the tappet inspection cover to the alloy rocker box.

Hope this helps.
