I am trying to make sense of a leak on the LH fork. On inspection there is no way of putting a box spanner up the leg as the manual shows. I guess someone in the past has tried to plug it up with something. So I am trying to get the fork out.

Thanks to Richard I have now got the fork out, its easy if you know how >>> now I do.
As suspected the fork bottom has been welded closed in an attempt to give some support to the snapped and missing part of the pinch bolt. Cant see a way of mending it so looks like a new fork bottom is required anyone got one for sale?

Graham. You are unlikely to find a good used one. Cracking through overtightening the pinch bolt is a common weakness, and any 50 year old part is likely to be weakened by now, so you could put good money after bad. I bought a new upgraded one, beefier round the nether regions, which gives piece of mind.

If wheel and mudguard have been removed then it is probably hanging under its own weight. You'll need to push the slider up, bringing top nut and damper rod to a position where you can separate them.
