Lightweight clutch cables

Forums

The clutch cable on my early Navigator snapped and I need a new one. The adjuster is down below on the gearbox housing and you need take off the right hand styling panel to get to it.

The later (1964 on) cables have the adjuster on top near to the ferrule for the lever. Can I use later clutch cables on early Lightweights?

Recycle!

I used the old cable on which the soldered on end had become loose in the gearbox. Luckily it was stuck in the cable holder on the clutch actuating lever nad has not dropped into the gearbox.

I opened the gearbox to get better access.

I found a cable adjuster in my parts boxes and the shortened the outer cable and soldered on a new cable end for the gearbox.

I left the cable aduster on the rear end of the gearbox in place and now I have one adjuster in a more convenient place. The clutch cable was not routed down to the gearbox in that photo.

Well done Ulrich,

It was always going to require a bit of work.

How does it fit now?

I started with a later cable and modified the gearbox end to fit early gearbox. The mid-adjuster is nearer the lever than your pictures show. This does allow the cable to route smoothly past the fork ears and top nuts.

On my Electra I have ball end levers with cable adjusters. Plus the standard adjusters for clutch and brake. Being able to adjust by hand on a long journey has been a real boon from time to time.

Luckily I grew up when cable making was an accepted practise. Is it legal to make a front brake cable these days?

Probably not.

Peter,

in the time of front disc brakes on modern bikes self made cables are rare, I guess.

I have a 1959 or so Moto Guzzi Cardellino 73cc .

I found brake cable ends with screws on it !
