1959 ES2 Norton, when taking off in first gear I have noticed the kick start falls down to the bottom of it"s stroke then returns wants I have changed gear.It has a new return spring and always returns wants the engine has started.I have put my leg against it when taking off in first gear with very little resistance to stop it falling down.Gear box sounds and feels OK. Anybody come across this before??

Hi Denis,

This is usuallyan indication that the layshaft bearing fitted into the gearbox case is worn and needs replacement. The play in the layshaft grips the kickstart shaft under load and pulls it backwards (one end ofthe layshaft runs inside the kickstart shaft). The bearing can break up causing much damage, it is usually replaced with a stronger roller bearing. Hope this helps.

Alan
