International pistons

Forums

I've just got a new piston for my inter but I'm not sure it's quite right. It doesn't have the cutaways in the top for the valves which my old piston has. However the engine has been rebuilt at some point and not run since, and it hasn't been rebuilt very well so I don't know if the piston I took out is right or not. It's a 1936 engine to fill TT spec with the ally barel and head with a bronze skull insert in the head. Would this mean I need a different piston from the standard inter? The company I bought the piston from are sure it is the correct one for an inter and it measures up correct. It's just the lack of these two cutaways. Can anyone help me out here? What do I need? And does anyone know where I can get one if I need a new one?

Hi Andy,

I don'tknow if the valve cutaways are essential but the piston for my 37 CS1 does have them, approx 4mm deep. The pistonis aflat top Hepolite, fairly low compression - the crown is 6mm above the top ring. If no-one more knowledgeable replies maybe you should contact one of the cammy experts - Barry Stickland, George Cohen, or Stu Rogers.

Cheers

I would be very cautious with that piston, I'm fairly certain that OHV and OHC Norton pistons had valve cutaways in them. Except maybe for the model 19 (mine had a dished piston) Even if the piston /cylinder clearance is correct, the valve may collide with the piston due to a lack of cut away. Consulting with one or more of our resident experts would be advisable.
