Inter tank mounts

Forums

Here I am pondering a choice of petrol tanks for my '48 International which has been years in the parts collection phase but with an end in sight. I have the standard frame with the integral front mount (narrow spacing for standard tank) and I have an original rear mount for the bolt-thru clubmans type tank. Ken McIntosh offers both type tanks as replicas and I'm trying to decide which to get.

My question regards the front mount to the frame. Can the alloy front mount for the bolt-thru tank be bolted to the existing integral mount to use the Clubmans tank?

Thanks,

Hi Mike

Depends what 'look' your after from the bike. I had a standard frame but wanted the ali mount. I cut the standard one off and brazed a new bracket on for the ali mount. I also modified the frame to take a steering damper (original 1934 bike would of had it on the tank,) and for the wrap around oil tank. I think someone had already modified the oil tank bracket for something else but done a bad job of it! Find someone with the correct equipment and it's straightforward enough.

If you'd rather leave the frame alone an ali bracket could probably be made to fit the standard mount but I think you'd need to drill 2 new holes in the ali and make up some bolts

My concern is if in stacking the alloy mount on the existing I put the whole mess too high. Always hesitant to cut a perfectly good frame.

I see that. My frame needed work anyway so I carried on and did it all. I think my front tank mount had already been butchered so I had to work on it anyway.

Is the original mount flat or does it have a rise in it? A special ali bracket could be made to keep the tank as low as possible.

Here's what the frame looks like, pretty much unmolested with repair almost completed (ES2 in background). Wouldn't be a big deal to make a mount. They look pretty simple, unlike the rear. And on that subject, I have yet to see a rear mount for the standard tank and wonder if there is a vertical offset for both sides or just one side.

If you measure thegapbetweenthetop of thefixedbracket and thehighest pointunder the top tube ( in that curve I guess),I will do thesame onmine(which is an Allyplate type)thenwecan see what the difference is...

You see a lot ofill fitting tanks on this model, which spoil the look completely. Iwill be backhome in8hourswill measureup then.

Hi Mike,

Don't think I'm trying to teach my granny to suck eggs, but are you aware that Inter and Manx tank bolt fixing hole centresare different widths, the Manx being 1" wider than the Inter front and back. This is because the Manx tank holds about a gallon more fuel. If you have an Inter Clubmans tank it will be the same as the bolt up type. The original ally platform is a 1/2" thickand is deeply counter bored to accept most of the tank rubber thicknessso shouldn't be too much of a problem as the 1948 handlebar clamps can be pivoted up to miss hitting the tank. Another way might be to make a false ally plate to drop over the existing lug but if you have the Manx tank the through bolts will clash with the outside of the original lug. Regards, Richard.

Thanks all for your input and help. I guess I could have just asked if one can directly fit a Clubmans tank to a standard frame but I got a lot more info by this route. And remember, if one has rarely seen chickens and eggs are an extreme rarity, egg-sucking instruction may be perfectly in order. I would guess that there are but a handful of Inters in California so I have to rely on the kindness of strangers on ths forum to get me underway.

Thanks,

Mike

Hope it helped Mike, Richard; not sure if mine is a Manx or an Inter, but the aluminumplate is about 9" logwith7-1/2 hole centers.Counter bore is about 3/16". Good luck with theproject Mike, definitely worth theeffort, they are agreatride. Mine is more of awork in progress than aproject. Get it allworking nicelythen make ita bit more presentable...

Hi Jon/Mike,

Just been looking at your bike Jon on J.DK,s site. Yes 7.5" is Manx and 6.5" is standard Inter. Your tank is the 1948/49 type Manxwhich is welded steel but still with the sump type taps. I fitted an original front platform earlier this year and wrote down the dimensions on the back of an evelope,so just got to find it! The picture of the Manx frame that Mike uploaded is 1949 DOHC hence the double bend in the top tube. ATB, Richard.

Hi Mike/Jon ,

I gave an incorrect measurment on the Inter front lug for the standard tank, this should have been 5.5" between centres. Sorry for causing any head scratching over the week-end butI've got too many number going around in a small brain. The good thing isif you use theManx ally mounting platethe through bolts should miss the standard lug, so looks promising Mike. ATB, Richard.
