The two screws holding the brass plate on the 1937 Inter oil pump cover are wrecked and I need to get them out to get at the pump, which is failing to return adequately.. What size and length are they, and what heads? They look like countersunk 1/8in BSF, and are going to need drilling out.

The 2 screws are 1/4 x 1.6 inches long. They pass right through the pump, holding it into the case. I agree with Colin, you should try to get them out intact. The pump should be a tight fit in the case. The recommended method of removal (EM Franks Norton book) is to tap the holes in the oil pump body 9/32 bscy and insert threaded rods which can be used to extract the pump. Heating the case before trying to extract the pump is also useful (possibly essential). The holes in my pump had already been tapped by a previous owner.

An article on the Vintage Norton blog made the point that heating the cases if the oil pump is the original mazac type is counter-productive as it expands more than aluminium.

Good tip Richard... The onlytime I hadtodoit, Iavoided the heat and it came out "easily". Poping it back inrequired someheat toget it to engage. Which concernedme, butthetip clarifiesit all.

Hello Tom... before you drill them out, use a suitable parallel punch and light hammer to put the distorted metal back in place. Then maybe a well fitting screwdriver can be used to remove them. also perhaps a bit of heat ??
