The impossible dream, a leak free primary

Forums

for years I have had a leak free primary due to the liberal use of silicone sealer between the rubber and case inner. After some repairs to the drive I found myself really struggling with cleaning off the silicone from the inner case. Without the silicone the case leaks badly. Is there another alternative sealer found to work?. The case is in good nick and has been given the Hudson treatment.

Hi Dan, I bought both types of silicon remover, absolutely no effect at all, there are obviously poor silicones and good ones, trust me to get the best!!.

My ES2 doesnât leak a drop, but then that might be because I run it dry! (itâs a trials bike and gets regular lubrication from me) but Iâve bought some the scapa tape that George used, to fit on my model 50 Iâm building when the frame comes back from the powder coaters.

I have always just used grease. I found that any leaks came from the gearbox mainshaft entry point, due to not having a felt seal between the sliding plates. Obviously if the inner and outer cases are bashed around and don't match, you have to bash them back into shape! Sorry - carefully tap them with you body-shop tools! You can also use silicone sealant as a gasket. Run a bead around the back of the inner case and let it go off. A tube goes a long way so if at first you don't succeed...try it another way - in the outer case perhaps. You end up with a "rubber" gasket that can complement the rubber seal.

Hi, newbie Norton owner here.. I have read all of this thread and any other info I could find on this issue and believe may have found something that worked for my bike (1963 Model 50) Somewhat of a combo of ideas posted. Tried the silicone thing, I really laid it on, secured the band to the inner case and let it set. Then gooped the hell out of the outer and the band. Installed with two threads showing ( not overtightened ) Let it set. Leaked BAD.

Cleaned it all off. Started again. Cleaned the inner case "land" where the the factory rubber band sits. Cleaned again. Wiped down with Tuelelene. Installed closed cell PVC foam self adhesive foam window seal. 1/2" X 1" fit perfect on the inner case. Liberal application of marine waterproof high temp wheel bearing grease... Bit of a grunt to get it to slide on but it will go on! It's early yet but been sitting for 48 hours, ridden twice, not a drop on the ground.

Still no leak with the red rubber grease, I really hope I have cracked it, hate the thought of a tenners worth of grease that i would not have any other use for!!, It does appear to be silicone based and should not be dissolved by dino juice. I will shorten the rubber band next time it comes off .
