Hairpin valve spring length

Forums

Hi there,

I’m currently sorting through a pile of parts for a 57 international engine and I found some newish looking springs but, when compared to another set of springs in the box of bits they are much longer. The short springs look right to me but as the engine was stripped years ago and not by me I’m a bit puzzled. Are the springs to be cut to size or are they from another type of engine?

Hi Geoff,

The long springs are from a short stroke Manx. These were made in pairs with the outer straight one in your photo being the same width as the International. Its pair has cranked legs so it fits between the one shown so they lay overlapped with each other on grooved plates resting around top of the valve guide. This was done to stop spring breakage as the earlier type Inter spring fixing is too rigid at high revs, hence the legs breaking. You are correct, you just cut the long ones to the correct length to fit your Inter. It is best to cut them with a grinding disc/wheel and smooth off any burrs.
