Front mudguard 62 Dommie

Forums

Hello the front guard is pretty battered and i would like to replace it with another steel one i can paint. Forks are  7” centres and current guard is wide with the scallops to clear the shrouds. Fancy a narrower 4” job and found one from Classic bike shop that states it fits nice on a 3.25x19 tyre. I have a TT100 3.60 tyre fitted and 4” looks a bit tight for the stay bolts to clear the tyre. Was thinking maybe using mushroom head bolts fitted from the inside not keen to see the nuts on the outside. Anyone else fitted a 4” guard with 3.60 tyre. Do i have any other mudguard options don’t want to change the tyre. Thanks

Hi Peter,

Cant see why not. Although I have 7 3/8" forks, I have a 4.3"/110mm wide mudguard and a 100/90 tyre (3.9" wide) on my Dommie.

You can always fit a wider stay bracket so nuts clear the tyre?

The original (if non-valanced) guards for 7" width forks are rare as hens' teeth. If it were mine I'd do my best to keep it.  But whatever you do, tyre choice is limited with 7" forks. I used to have a Roadrunner, but there's a Roadrider in the garage that won't fit. Original size now. 3.00 size.

Regarding bolts - if you are having clearance issues, it's because you are using an over-size 3.25 tyre instead of 3.00.  I'm back to Speedmaster MkII.

Norton used the same slightly domed hexagon headed bolts for the stays as they did since at least early 1930's with the heads naturally outside.  1/4"BSF (maybe cycle originally?).  My clearance issues to 90/90-19 RoadRider are due to side edges both touching the bridge with my 7" fork width, but my bridge is (I suspect) not standard.  I think some owners have managed to fit them.  There's enough clearance overhead, although not so much that you can easily fit the guard with the wheel in place.

I think the mudguards are the same, just a different width bridge. The stays and bridge bolts go through so you could get away with any thread you like as no-one will know if it's BSF, BCY, Whit, AF or any UN type.  As long as the bolt diameter is correct.  This really applies to any through bolts on a bike as well as some setscrews like the stays to fork leg fixings and the bridge to fork leg studs.

Stay bolts are 5/16 both ends, screwed into the tapped lugs at the bottom of forks. Getting the old guard blasted to see how bad it is. Not going for concours so reckon i can do a reasonable job thanks for all comments

The guards are the same but the recess for the forks is pressed deeper for the 7" forks. So the bridges are different, and the guards are not interchangeable.  The usual suppliers don't tell us (on their web sites last time I looked) which bridge they stock, but I'm fairly sure it is the wider type.
