Front footrests angle

Forums

On my Commando 850 MK3 I notice that the front footrests are tilted up. Before I get these re-chromed I want to know if this is normal or has the bike been dropped at some time bending the pegs so that they are not in a straight line across the bike. I cannot see any cracks or bend marks so is this correct?

Before I fitted rearsets mine used to be tilted visibly upwards from the horizontal. I always assumed they were like that in order to prevent your feet sliding off the edge of the rubbers. It's fairly unlikely both pegs would be bent out of alignment to the same angle anyway.

i found mine where like that an as there was some evidance of an accident in the past on other parts of the machine i also thought they where damaged. I got a second set off Ebay both where the same as mine but my brake lever was missing the plate to mount the switch an even after rechroming the best of the two sets it was still cheaper (just) than a new lever. Also thinking about it later (as you do) the Z plate would bend strong though it is why before that big cast steel lump.

But i did not like the look of them for behind ( thats the trouble with having it on eye level) on hydraulic table i never saw them pointing up when machine was on floor. To save tring to bend the main footrest bracket i marked the high point on the footrest "pin" 062734 then un screwed it put two nuts on the (7/16unf) thread then held them in a vice as iheated with oxy. torch an bent with lenght of tude over the plain part (small local garage may help for a bit of bear money if you dont have a torch) it may take a few goes but the pins are cheap to replace if you have to. I did try bending one cold an it did move a little but snapped before it was at right angle and looking at the brake an the way it broke instantly with no cracking of the surface first i would say from my engineering background it was a stronger type of steel than mild steel an so heat is a must but dont try cutting an welding back together as the joint may fail in the future.

So it does sound like they where made that way but then again if Norton made bikes with the wheels not in line (yes i fixed that to) am sure they would have lost more sleep over that than the footrests not looking level.

Thanks Chris & Karl, I may try bending the pin but I think I will wait until I have finnished the bike and see how they feel.At least I now knowthat this is how they were made.

Not something I noticed on my Mk3, but when I changed to half bought/half home made rearsets I made sure these were horizontal.

If you want to bend the footrests horizontal then do it. The bikes weren't perfect when they came out of the factory. If you're a stickler for originality be sure to fit a camshaft with one pair of soft lobes.

The footrests should be straight, if they're not then they are bent. heat to cherry red and bend them back to where you want them, (off the bike preferably) then re-chrome or paint. The pins are designed to break off in an accident. Pretty sure that's mentioned in the NOC service notes.
