Frame identification

Forums

Hi there, can anyone help me identify an ES2 plunger frame I have. The frame numbers on the nearside of the headstock are

S M&B +10446 on the top backbone tube is 41679. I need to get a log book, any information on the year and advise that may help me when dealing with the DVLA will be much appreciated as I have never tried to get a log book re-issued before. I am in Jersey, and our vehicle licencing dept will not entertain anything without paperwork.

Many thanks Kev.

Hi Kev,

The Norton numbering system had a prefix letter for the years from 1948 to 1960, 1948 = C through to 1960=R. The plunger frame models were from around 1949 to 1953 and the prefix letter for these years are 1949 (D), 1950 (E), 1951 (F), 1952(G), and 1953(H), followed by number, (10446) and the letter S denotes a single model. The original engine would have had the same number as the frame and is stamped on the drive side of the crankcase below the cylinder barrel.

I hope that this helps, Rob.

I think that you're quoting casting numbers. If the plungers are like the rigids (and I think they are) then the number should be stamped on the lower part of the left hand front fuel tank lug casting.

Yes the frame number is on the nearside of the headstock casting and the engine number is on the nearside of the crankcase below the cylinder barrel. Both of these numbers and prefix letter would be the same when the machine left the factory, (matching numbers), as I indicated in my original reply, Rob.

Hi Richard, I missed the number in the area that you refered too., now it all makes sense, this number was ingrained with rust, but after cleaning it up it reads, G41952,42701 which I pressume is the engine and frame number.

Many thanks for your help :)

Thanks for your help Rob, I've found the letter I couldn't before, a G 1952

Cheers :) Kev...

Kev, 42701 certainly fits with early 1952.

If you ask the club for machine dating based on this, they'll be able to confirm original gearbox and fork numbers amongst other things (Don't think that you're done with looking for numbers yet !)

Rich.
