I have been given a 1957 99 engine, and frame. Not knowing why it was put out of service I thought I would have a quick look in the chain case where I found these two bits of metal floating around. Can anyone shed any light on where they came from apart from in the chain case? If you can a part number would be most welcome!

........and before I start to look like a complete twit here is a photo of where they came from which, I know it in French, isn't the chain case!

Mike, thank you very much. Is this a regular problem? I am presuming it wouldn't have been a reason to strip a bike apart.

When I got my 1957 99 as a box of bits in 1990 the friction spring was broken like yours. It was replaced during the engine rebuild then and I haven't looked at it since. So in my case it hasn't been a problem.

To fit a new one you will only need to dismantle the contents of the timing chest. The friction spring sits behind the dynamo fibre gear wheel.

Again, thank you Mike. I am going to shortly embark on the amusing process of looking for front forks, not sure what would fit outside of original Norton roadholders, wheels, tanks etc etc. Long way to go but as the summer starts to wane winter projects burgeon !
