Flushing oil, Moly Slip and remote oil filters?

Forums

As I gradually fettle my Navigator I washed out the oil tank and tank strainer with petrol (horrified at the amount of muck that came out of it!), replaced the sump strainer and sump plate with a club alloy one with the magnetic drain plug and changed the oil. Having run it for 500 miles I was planning on using flushing oil to clean out the engine and then changing the oil for Halfords Classic 20/50 with Molyslip additive which I have used very successfully to reduce friction and mechanical noise (slightly!) on classic car engines. Has anyone any positive or negative experience of using flushing oil and / or Molyslip in the engine and / or gearbox of a Lightweight Twin engine?

I am also considering fitting one of the club remote oil filters - is the oil pump up to it and is it a practical system? Looking at the bracket on the website and the bike does it mount on the bottom of the central frame member using the two bolt that hold the bracket that the centre stand rubber stop is mounted on?

Hi Nick,

I don't have any experience of flushing oil and/or Molyslip but have fittedone of the oil filters from the club. I decided not to use the club bracket as I was concerned that the using the centre stand would rub on the oil pipes and therefore made my own bracket. This turned the filter 90 deg. and there is no chance of thepipes rubbing. Pic attached.

Thanks David,

That is a very neat installation and I really like the way you have routed the oil pipes. The main problem I can foresee is trying to design and mount the bracket with the bike fully assembled! Your restoration looks immaculate - what colour code did you use for the polychromatic blue? It looks spot on in the photo!

I once looked at Halfords Classic oil and decided it has very few of the necessary additives for a classic. I use Morris classic or similar . Check carefully.

Good point Robert, I've not checked the spec but I've used Morris classic oil in the past - just difficult to get round here. Mail order may be the solution.

Hi Nick,

Thanks for the compliment but the blue is not a match to polychromatic blue. The bike had been brush painted all over in black, except for the rust, dents and holes in the tank, when I got it. It was a real mess. I have "rebuilt" it, not "restored" it as it's not done to the original colours. I just liked the blue. The parts were all powder coated by Paul and Dave at Redditch Shotblasting. Black frame etc., and old metallic blue tank, mudguards etc.

Its looking fantastic Dave and the blue looks correct although photos never quite show the real colour. This is my unrestored 64 Navigator freshly washed and polished so you cant see the rusty front rim and stone chipped and patinated paint! I am totally bias but I still think they are amongst the most attractive Norton's built.
