Featherbed stand welding

Forums

The centerstand frame abutment pads on the Atlas are well indented from wear ,Has anyone had these welded ,and what method ? .I have some rudimentry Arc equipment ( and little welding skill) and intend to just build up the indents and grind off flat. Is the frame tough enough to withstand my ministrations I wonder. Or should it be mig welded?.I'm having the worn stand pivot holes filled with braise and re-sized , I'm thinking this may provide a better wearing combination than steel on steel .

I did the following:

â? Cleaned the involved parts.

â? Two pieces of stainless sheet metal formed to half tubes so they fit over the tube on a undamaged part of the frame.

â? Filled the dents with J-B-Weld.

â? Putted the half tubes on the J-B-Welded parts.

â? Hold the half tubes in place using the centerstand for a day or so.

Many years ago, faced with a similar problem, Iremoved the petrol tank and battery, turned the bike upside down and arc welded a couple of 1" x 1" bits of 1/8" steel over the indentations. All measurements are approximate. You may fling your hands in the air in horror but I was young at the time and it worked. Would I do the same now? Probably.

arc welding on thin material is an art, even for a competent person, best to use mig if possible.if the indentations are not to deep then building up is fine but keep the heat low,if to deep put plates in and build from there, also wear the correct eye protection, welding flashes are painful and dangerous
