Exhaust washer (gasket)

Forums

Can someone tell me if it makes a difference as to which way the copper crush washer is installed between header pipe and cylinder head ? My bike is a 1950 ES 2 with iron head- washer is copper with insulating material inside , round in section, seam on one side- does the seam go towards the head or towards the pipe ? Thanks - Richard

Hi Richard,

I had a rash of exhaust gasket/washers disintegrating on me a few years ago, living in the U.S. meant not being able to pop over to the nearby Norton spares stockist for replacements.

My solution was to take a length of soft, 1/8th inch copper tubing found at plumbing supply shops, form the tubing around an object of the same diameter as the standard item and trim the tubing to exactly butt the ends together inside the exhaust port, I didn't bother with soldering the ends as I figured on the carbon build up to fill in the tiny gap.

Problem solved, I have yet to need a new gasket and it has been several years now, the soft copper tubing will crush slightly as the exhaust rose nut is tightened, but! It won't go away like the stock issue items do, nor has it loosened on its own.

Don't forget the Neverseize!

regards,

Albert

Hi Richard,

I can see you have already had good replies to this, but as an extra point, it is always worth re-tightening after a couple of runs, as often you can get another 1/8th turn at this point. Do this with the engine hot, but mind your fingers! The gasket is far less likely to leak if you do this.

By the way, I sell the proper crushable copanda exhaust washers if you require them, as well as Cammy Norton exhaust nuts.

Best wishes,

Paul Norman
