Exhaust blues

Forums

Does a blueing of the exhaust pipe where it exits the head mean something is wrong? After about 800 miles on a completely rebuilt engine, my ES2 has this phenomenon. I will check the ignition timing and tappet clearances this weekend, but don't suspect either is wrong. Should I be worrying, like more than I normally would with an old bike?

Have you cleaned your carb lately? Perhaps there is a bit of swarf in the main jet.

Also check the condition of the exhaust nut gasket and the end of the pipe to make sure everything there is square and correct.

Is the exhaust pipe a new replacement? I believe that the new ones on the market are made from some thinner material than the original factory items. Heat causes the blueing and perhaps the thinner material causes the exhaust heat to transfer to the outside of the pipe rapidly and thus blue the chrome.

...yes, the pipe is new and noticeably lighter guage than the original. Looking on other forums (fora?) it's a common question regarding what to do to remove it and the consensus is... stop worrying and ride it, which suits me fine. That's not to say you shouldn't first check the obvious potential problem causes i.e. tight pushrods and weak mixture.

Thanks for advice Mike
