My ES2 has the classic setup of ball bearing in the steering head and I would like to convert it to tapered bearings. I did find them for featherbed frames but not for a 1948 ES2 with plunger frame (gardengate). A friend of mine told me Timken Bearings supplies tapered bearings that will fit a pre '50ties BSA B33/34 frame... indeed these are not Nortons...
Without having to dismantle the entire front, could someone inform me about the dimentions of the steering head bearings in this gardengate frame (inner/outer diameter). This way I could check with bearing companies for possible solutions.
Thank you in advance

Any good.
BTW...I wouldn't bother with tapered roller bearings, you have a friction damper fitted anyway....just my opinion though

I converted my 99 to taper rollers years ago. I don't think there was any improvement and I think they are more vulnerable to corrosion .If they need replacement I would switch back .The headlamp brackets would fit better too.

Interesting that you have…
Interesting that you have positive experiences with the ball bearings whereas it seems a topic to change them for tapered...Maybe it is because it is accepted that they are stronger ( is this needed in the steering head?) or is the steering experience better under heavy breaking because these bearings can be put under more pre-load?
Nevertheless I share your positive experience with the standard setup...
Thank you 4 yr feedback! Rgds Werner
