Electric start for an ES2?

I have had an enquiry asking if anyone knows of an electric start conversion for an ES2. Can anyone help?

I don't know if there is one, but I know of an existingstarter systemthat, without too much work, could be made to fit.

I have seen a Velocette with an electric leg installed, not too sure of how it worked, at a glance it appeared that the starter motor was placed where the generator went. I suppose a late alternator type ES2 could have one installed in front of the cylinder barrel. A good sheet metal worker could knock together the cover for the starter drive to the crankshaft.

I visited Phil Pearson's website (www.bsagoldstar.co.uk) and saw a short video clip of one that he's developed for the goldstar, the starter motor lies between the engine and gearbox and is connected by a short chain to a duplex engine sprocket. This set up probably wouldn't work for the alternator type singles because of space issues.

He also has a TLS front brake plate that has the mechanism hidden inside, away from purists disapproving eyes.

If you were prepared to use the valve lifter, quite a small starter and battery would be ok. I threw a jap starter away today, wasnt much bigger than a Lucas dynamo, worked via a chain and sprag clutch behind the engine sprocket[chainbelt primary],would not be impossible to fit the lot.Theres no room to hide it in the single tube frame, but it might fit in a featherbed between engine and gearbox. Incidently, fifty years ago I worked for a man who had a Lucas starter generator from an old car fitted into the sidecar frame driving direct from the engine sprocket by shaft on his Big 4,with a large battery that was also ballast for the sidecar. I don't think Chris is interested now Albert. I know of a cheap available system that could be put onto an ES2 quite easily, I told Chris herebut apparantly he did not want to know! I wonder if the other member who put forward theoriginal enquirey still wants to know... perhaps he's sorted it now?

Hi Les.

I must be missing something from this thread, you say you told Chris here, is this on this page ? I cannot see anything.

I am looking for an electric start for a 19S. Any suggestions ?

I made a reply here shortly after Chris asked his question then a few others have donetoo.I said I could think of a system that could be adapted, in my opinion, from cheaply available motorcycle parts made for the job. Chris unfortunately hasnever replied to any of them even though 5 weeks have passed! As someone who runs the message board he should be setting a good example to others.

Too many people who use this message board ask a question and never come back with a thank you or anything whatsoever, and I didn't want to waste typing time if Chris was not interested and I think that is completely fair! It seems only about 30% of all questions posted here are returned to by the questioner with an acknowledgement or a thank you which is pretty miserable in my opinion and extremely impolite too.

If the starter was for you Tony, I was going to suggest the electric start form the Indian Royal Enfield ES models. This is a similar single cylinder 500cc engine. The starter motor is bolted onto the front like a Velo dynamo and has a sprag clutch to drive the crankshaft to avoid damaging kickback problems. With some work, I reckon it could be adopted quite easily.I doubt if you will ever get parts as cheaply as you can for this system. Most bits can be sourced directly from India via Ebay at very cheap rates. Hope this is of some help at least.

Thanks for the response, the starter is not for me but for a member who does not have access to the internet. His actual question was "did I know anybody who would fit an electric start to his 19S" as he does not have the engineering skills to do this himself.

If there is anyone out there who is prepared to develop a system that could be fitted to a number of models then I am sure it would have a lot of interest.

The Enfield is an interesting suggestion, I will see if I can get a good look at one.

I am not sure I understand your comment about the sprag clutch as this will not prevent kickback problems, you need a 'backfire overload device' as used on the MkIII.
