Electra frame number location

Forums

I have the option of purchasing a 1964 Norton Electra still displaying original Reg. No. Engine number visible, but cannot find frame No. Looked in all the usual places. A friend of mine suggested they may never have had one ?

Can anyone help?

All Jubilees and Navigators were stamped on the right hand side of the frame down by the passenger footrest as in John's photo. Later models which probably included all Electras were very lightly stamped and easily covered up with paint. The exact position can vary but always in this general area.

You should find theframe number on the footrest mounting bracket, leftin the picture and left of the frame tube.

The font will be the same as the engine number. (If it's original)

This is a peculiarity of Plumstead made machines like yours.

The impressions will be much fainter than the older, Norton style numbering shown in the photo. Easily obscured with paint.

Use paint stripper rather than abrasives to remove paint if you don't want to degrade the numbering further.

My 1964 Navigator has the frame number in a different place. It is still near the right side pillion footrest but in larger numbers and on the gusset that supports the footrest. I know it is original as I bought the bike from the original owner.

The photo shows it clearly

On my Navigator the number is stamped on the left hand side passenger footrest bracket.

Number should start with a 19... for Navigator, but mine starts with 17.... for a Jubilee. So I guess the left frameloop was replaced at some point in the life of the bike.

The frame was powdercoated and the number was not taped off in the first attempt and was no more visible afterwards. The powdercoaters removed the coating , taped off the number and recoated the frame loop for free!
