Electra cam timing marks

Forums

I'm reassembling my electra and need some advice on the timing marks. I have 2 punchmarks on both the inlet and exhaust cam which line up with the 2 sets of double punch marks on the idler gear. When they line up there is a single punchmark on the idler gear at the 6 o'clock position which should line up with something on the pinion gear. There are no marks on the pinion gear and I was wondering does the single punch mark on the idler line up with the location of the woodruf key on the pinion gear. When I do this the rods are at top dead center and the camshafts lobes are pointed horizontal, which would mean both valves are closed at TDC as they should be. I can post phots if the above isn't clear.

Exactly so, Ian. Crank at TDC (which puts the Woodruff key at 12 o'clock as you say), single dot on the idler gear at 6 o'clock (adjacent to said key), double dots aligning with the dots on the camshaft gears. This has always worked for me.
