Dominator 99 starting problems

Forums

Hello,

I have a 99 and it does not start. Or more it did start, and then one day did not start. I suspected the magneto may have failed, so I sent this away for reconditioning.

I have so far re-installed the reconditioned magneto, timed the ignition, put new spark plugs in, checked the carb, itâs got a 12v battery with plenty of juice and still it will not start. There doesnât appear to be any spark from the plugs when I kick the bike over, is it possible the HT leads are faulty?

Otherwise I havenât the foggiest so any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Rory

I have had plug caps go to a very high resistance, try for a spark to the head without the cap. (which should show NO resistance) Then try with a new wire center lead, I have had them fail too , though could not see any fault.

I had a similar prob with my ES2 after a few months lay-up. The HT pick-up was very messy so I cleaned that up and put a hot air blower (hair dryer will do) on the mag/electrics. It finally sparked and started.

This starting problem is most likely to be caused by the magneto. Either the igition timing is wrongly set or the magneto has a fault.

First check that the magneto is giving a good spark at the plug end. Do this with both plugs out of the cylinder head. If no spark then check the lead connections at both ends of the HT cable. Make certain that the HT cable has a wire centre. If it is a cabron cable, get some wire ones.

Check the magneto pickups are clean and not sticking. Also check the earthing brush is doing its job. It may have broken or fallen out of its spring.

Give all the contact rings a clean with a cloth to get rid of any carbon residue, though there should not be much inside a new magneto.

Check the points are the correct gap. 12 to 15 thou. Do this at both firing points. It may be that the points are earthing out due to a problem with the points.

If after all of the above there is still no visible spark. Ask your magneto repair man to check it for you.

If the Mag was reconditioned then it should have been tested to work, its likely that the fault would be in the bits you have added to it?. leads, plug caps and plugs .

I was always told to start with the simple/cheap end first. Plugs, caps, leads and points.

When you got your mag repaired/reconditioned/otherwise fettled did it include a replacement capacitor which is buried somewhere deep in the bowels of the mag(assumes a Lucas K2F).

If all else fails try a Thorspark electronic ignition system from sussexmotorcycles.com. It solved all my ignitions problems. Easy to install and my Dommie fires up 2nd or 3rd kickeven when hot.

Hello I having looked on different forums and most say poor starting is to do with the petrol being less dense and can cause flooding in the carburetor and wetting the spark plugs even modern motorcycles are having starting problems along with some cars so the fuels are not what they where, yours anna j

I rather doubt that. Average UK density unleaded 95 octane, 0.745

Average UK density unleaded 98 octane, 0.756

Average UK density Super leaded , 0.734

Source CONCAWE fuel survey Europe 1996.

The range for europe for leaded was 0.72 - 0.77 and for unleaded 0.72 - 0.78. Heavier fuel have higher aromatic content.

More recent surveys show similar ranges for the unleaded fuels, but the leaded fuels have gone

Sounds to me like a spark issue.
