decompression plate, 1or 2 or don't bother

Forums

I have a 750, which I can no longer start from cold due to poorly knee. However if I get my son to start it with his size 11s it is 2 kicks, once it has been run I can then restart it myself. I have two 1mm thick plates to go under barrels to lower compression and wonder if anyone has experience of effect of fitting them. In particular 1 or both, and should they have paper gaskets above and below or will a coat of Wellseal on both surfaces suffice. I could just fit one and try it, but a lot of repeat spannering if I then want second one. Performance no longer an issue, spent more time on the brakes!

Opinions/ review from anyone who has lowered compression appreciated.

Martin - have you considered an electric start. The Alton is very good. I apperciate they are not cheap (£2K) but you get a lot of engineering for your money.

I have fitted one with 2 gaskets on the 750 Atlas  ,No problems appart from the usual comedy act trying to get the rings in without breakage.  The change in kick start resistance is not great , but must help.It does change the rocker action a little ,but in my case due to valve seat recession I think it  made things better. If you are going to use 2 plates I would check the effect on rocker/valve contact and use  a torque wrench with adaptor on the base nuts  ,dont want to fracture the flange .

Due to the cost of the "Alton" conversion and the fragility of them, would a track style roller starter at home be beneficial?.

Alternatively what about a longer kick start lever.  I use a honda off road folding one on my Inter; splines are the same and folds at the shaft end.  Saves having folding footrest etc.

I can now kickstart the Atlas but I have modified my technique   to  copy what I do on a high comp single , IE     a steady  pressure on the KS till  it just passes comp on one cylinder. Then kick. Or  put in gear and pull back against compression ,then  neutral and kick.
