Cylinder stud repair

Hi, back in the NOC again after 30 years absence. Im rebuilding my 850 Interstate and have a few challenges.

The first one is the threaded hole at the centre/front of the cylinders has stripped. Results are blowing gasket and oil leaks.

Is it possible to get it welded up and re-threaded or some sort of insert put in?

If it can repaired, are there any recommendations of who could do it?

I bought a re-thread kit which contained all I needed, Drill bit, tap, coils, did it all freehand just used a chippies set square to keep verticle. A local engineer will probably charge a similar cost but then you have the kit which you could sell on plus new skills.

I had a similar job done on my 1972 750 Roadster by BLR Engineering http://blrengineering.co.uk/

Although I'm sure any nearby engineering firm would take the job on if you're nervous - as I was - of drilling straight. I know it's obvious but do make sure the correct size threaded insert is fitted for the stud - probably a BSCy (cycle thread) 26 tpi - but do check.

Stripped thread:- Helicoil normally first choice followed by thread insert depending on material left.

There are several engineering solutions each repare has to be assesed on examination.

BLR - I remember riding my first Commando down from Brum to get an exhaust thread repair done by them in the early 80s!

At least I think it was them.

I've done one recently. Bought a kit with 10 helicoil inserts and only used one. Where in the country are you? I'm in RG22. I can probably help if you're able to get the barrel to me.

Hi, thanks for all the replies, sorry I didn't get back sooner, but work got in the way.

If I remember correctly, the hole was taped about 30 years ago and failed. That was to take a bigger stud. So I don't know if there will be enough metal left to use a helicoil.

Im down in the forest of dean. GL15. The bike is still built but wouldn't take too long to get the barrels back off if the weather gets a little warmer. I'll need to tidy the shed a bit to get room to work first.

For the moment, its great to know that a repair is possible and I would be happy to travel to take the barrel to anyone who could help. Also willing to pay for the repair as that must be cheaper than new barrels.

Update: enquiries to BLR will be re-directed to JD Autoworx (020 8395 2203), who do business at the same address (Unit 8, Clyde Rd, Wallington, Surrey, SM6 8PZ).

They have just done an excellent job of fitting new oversized valve guides and supplying new valves to suit (the old guides had been knurled [ ! ] at some point in the bike's previous history).
