Commando tacho drive oil leaks

Forums

i have a '77 Mk 3 commando and it goes very well, however I have oil leaks from my tacho drive on the front of the engine. I have spoken to Norvil in the past about this, and have bought and fitted their modified housing with the oil seal added at the bottom end - but still I get oil leaks. I have tried all sorts of extra experiments but to no avail, and am reluctant to take the last advice given to me by Norvil - to put in much thicker oil - there has to be a better way.

Does anyone know of a miracle cure for this one. Oil covered boots are not good for either the carpet or your street cred.

Look into crank case pressure relief valves of the reed valve type. Mine has a Yamaha XS650 part grafted on were older engines had the magneto fitted. This is a cheap enough and common modification you should be able to find out alot about it on this site and Access Norton website but also check the general health of your engine with regards to piston rings sealing against bores and valve guide leakage etc.

Mick Hemmings claims to have an effective seal for the tach drive. You should talk to him. He may also recommend your engine have a good breather (he also supplies one) and be in generally good health.

A non return valve in the breather line will help enormously but it does sound like the Norvil oilseal aint working. Is the seal in the right way round? I have the same mod but the seal needs gluing in as its just too small diameter for the ID the housing was machined to. Norvil do a breather valve but mine just failed after 14 years. They charge a lot of money so I got a replacement off ebay for £8. You will need the 1/2" BSP to 1/2" pipe tails as well. I think the supplier shown below does them too. Cut the main pipe fit the valve and position up behind the aircleaner. That or the Yamaha XS part.
