Forums

Hi can anyone help Have got my 1962 Navigator back on the road it sailed through its MOT no problem .Well went out for a run all going well untill i lost the clutch .I thought it was a broken cable and managed to limp home .When I looked the cable seems to be OK but the actuacting leaver seems to be turning inside the gearbox and not pushing the clutch rod .Does anyone hav any idies what may have happened .

Thanks Steve

Is this a case of the Clutch Operating Body rotating within the Gearbox End Plate?

If so - then it may well be the small Clutch Operating Body Peg (a very small peg that resembles a short 2BA type bolt) that holds the Body in the End Plate (mounted horizontally and towards the front of the Body) has not been put in or has become dislodged and no matter how tight you try and torque up the castlelated Locking Ring into the Gearbox End Plate, the Body will eventually rotate anti-clockwise and towards the rear of the box when the clutch lever is pulled in.

N.B. the Clutch Operating Body has a groove down the forward side that should be mounted over the peg and before screwing up the lock ring, thereby retaining the body within the inner Gearbox End Plate.

Hope this may shed some light on the problem,

Hi Steve

I will attempt to attach a .jpg diagram of the Gearbox ("Plate B"). The Clutch Operating Body Peg part you are looking for is number 72 on this plate (but is tiny so you may need to magnify it up on your PC). The Part No. is 041305 - unfortunately NOC Shop Spares don't have any, but you should be able to fabicate one from e.g the 2BA bolt mentioned (or suitable metric equiv). Just make sure the "head" of the bolt / peg slides in the groove of the Clutch Operating Body (number 69 on the "Plate B" diagram) and the length does not protrude through the side of the Gear Box End Plate. The Peg needs to be inserted into a small hole in the (forward) side of the Gear Box End Plate (number 64 on Plate B) - I have in the past used tweezers or small long nose pliers to achieve this! -before the Clutch Operating Body and locking ring are installed.

Cheers for now

Brian

Thanks again Brian I have manufactured the little pin and clutch is all back together and working as it should .Went out for a test ride on Sunday and there is an oil leak from the gearbox main drive sprocket I have ordered up a sleeve gear oil seal.

Steve,

Good News! at least the clutch can be pulled in! - The sleeve gear (bearing) oil seal - Humm - Cheap enough - but a somewhat long process to fit!

This requires stripping the drive side off (clutch, primary chain, casings, G/box Drive Sprocket - which if I remember, having knocked back the tab washer, is LEFT HAND Threaded - etc.). The Oil seal itself then be extracted from the G/Box and the new 'un fitted (externally to the G/box from the Drive side [LHS} over the G/Box Main Driveshaft and tapped into the casing. Then its a case of reassembling the Drive Side ....

Heh-hoh - the joys of these old bikes - sound like your on your way though!

Keep me updated (I really DO like my old Navigator) - have a Churchillian poster type attachment (.doc) file to keep you inspired!

Cheers

Brian
