clutch

Forums

hello

on my 55 es2. the laydown clutch basket is flapping in the wind. it has loads of play even when its all secured up.

i have an old complete clutch and on looking at that with the corks being the first in the basket then you put a plain plate with the tangs on the inside on top . if i press my fingers down on that plate there is still a load of play when i pull the chain wheel / basket up and down. but if i replace the first plain plate with one with the tangs on the outside and press it down it seems to eliminate all the play in the basket, bar a little. its as though the outer tangs hold the clutch basket in position. does this mean i have the wrong combination of plates in my es2. realising of course when you pull the clutch in it will all slip/loosen up as it should.

thanks

.. these are often quite proud of the slots in the basket and can be quite loose in their slots (although should actually be tight) meaning that even when all tightened up there can be play in the basket as the basket slides in & out on the inserts.. Mine is like that but I've never noticed any ill effects.

hello Ian

yes, it has the push in type of inserts. i was just looking at the old clutch i have and its workings. as i noticed it was the same as the clutch in me bike. play wise.

on me bike i seem to have lost my pefect clutch, operation wise. what it was a car pulled in front of me, so i braked and pulled off in the gear i was in with a lot of clutch slip then after that the clutch just built up until it wouldnt clear so had no clutch.

so i was just looking at the old clutch i have, just to see if something could cause it to build up, heat wise. i dont know if where the race the bearing runs in at the back of the clutch should touch the back plate. because it is running on it, in the groove.  it all runs together until you pull the clutch in i know.

its not a problem, just having look to see if i could solve anything.   i think me perfect clutch fell off.

hello David ,

no inserts fell out. i fitted some new solid bonded type clutch plates i think i could only get four in as they were thicker than the originals. not long after i went on a 25 mile charity run mainly through town. using first and second gear a lot and on the clutch a lot. it was fine after that. so just wonder why it went wrong with a short heavy burst on the clutch and carried on getting worse so no clutch at all. adjustment didnt help. so i just wonder if it is something other than the clutch plates warping due to heat.

not sure I quite understand your clutch problem but could it be that the clutch centre nut has come loose. This rapidly unscrews once loosened, removing clutch action progressively and quite quickly. As the nut undoes itself, the clutch basket becomes loose and wobbly and the pushrod no longer reaches the outer cover

The Domi clutch basket is just a glorified clutch disc, check the bearings, and the race areas they run on. I suspect the clutch centre race plate has worn on its centre hole which fits onto the clutch centre. Maybe just a case of wear in various places.

A badly set up clutch will drag and overheat  to swell up and become useless . left alone it will cool down and some use will return.  Any one who has ridden a clubmans Gold star in heavy traffic  will be familiar with the problem.

hello ,David

the clutch centre nut is ok . i was left with no clutch operation. adjustment to give it free play on the cable didnt work. not able to change gear properly. so i stripped the clutch down and i couldnt really see why it had happened. so i put it all back together, hey presto, a clutch.

i was just looking at the old spare clutch i have for any clues as to why .

Ashley,

like you say, possible wear on parts. design ect.

Robert,

think i was ok on adjustment, but i know what you mean. i think its a case of use the bike and see how it goes on. i think i am probably looking for something on the clutch that does not exist. mainly just theorizing over its operation.

thanks
