Chain case oil seal

Forums

Took my jubilee out for a run today and came back with the left side rather oily! It looks like the sleeve gear seal is leaking, while Iâm there I might as well do the chaincase oil seal which seems to have a steel cover is it easy to change, the retainer appears to held by little pins?

cheers

I should add that itâs a late gearbox.

Hello Dan,

I have just done mine, though mine had an alloy ring snap riveted on to hold the oil seal.

I posted a picture not long ago. I replaced the alloy ring with the thin retainer you have and think that is should be either riveted on or fitted with interference pins - riveted is my guess. I don't think it needs to be removed to replace the seal. The old one being prised out from the inner chain case side, and a new one pressed in until it buts up-to the plate retaining ring. I had to warm my chain case though as a very close fit. I got both the retaining ring and seal from the NOC shop. Assembled now else would send a picture. FWI in my case the alloy ring had the thin retaining ring on as well but this had fouled the final drive shaft and worn to be very thin. I think the alloy space was an interesting mod, probably designed to increase the chain case thickness to better support the oil seal - in my case it did not work and I don't think is required. Not listed anywhere else.

Thanks Andrew, Iâve got a few spare inner chain cases but they are all early ones and I havenât dismantled mine yet to see if the later ones are different, the seal sizes certainly are. Iâve got some spare seals for my early Nav, so will need to source some more. The good news is the later seals are in stock in the NOC spares store.
