Centre stand

Forums
Is the centre stand on a 55 ES2 supposed to clang against the underside of the silencer when going over bumps? I can't find any adjustable stop. George

Mine did that on my plunger framed ES2, very irritating. Then I bought a new return spring and...problem solved. Only proviso is that with a new spring it's best to let the stand return gently when pushing the bike off the stand or it's CLANG!!!! and you'll dent the silencer. It does seem that the stand is meant to rest against the silencer from what I could gather. New springs are cheap from the parts store.

Hi George

On my '56 19S there is plenty of clearance between the stand and silencer. The stand comes up against a frame lug right beside the pivot bolt. See pic of LHS pivot (note: must repaint the stand sometime!).

Cheers

Thanks for the prompt replies guys. I recognise that lug, Ian. I think mine's the same (I'll check in the morning). I can't believe that it is a design feature that the stand should rest against the u/s of the silencer. The stand does return rather lazily so I guess a new spring is in order but the stand will still clonk the silencer. George

Interesting second pic, Ian, Either I have a wide stand or the silencer for some reason is too close to the bike? I'll have a closer look in the morning. Thanks for your pics Ian.

I know its going back a long time, and memory plays trick with you, but I'm sure that these modern replica silencers are bigger than the old original one that was on my 54 ES2. Every time I see one I just think they are too big and look out of place. John

You could be right, John. I've just crawled round the garage floor checking things and the stand overlaps the silence (in horizontal plane) by about 30mm. I wondered if the stand was twisted but it seems to be reasonably OK. I would need to pack the gap between the stand and the lug by some 3mm or so to keep the stand away from the silencer which may then have the stand clonking the ground on corners. Perhaps I should keep a lookout for an original silencer?

The perspective of that 2nd pic is a bit misleading so I have retaken it looking straight down the axis of the bike. There is a similar horizontal overlap between stand and silencer so I assume that the 19S exhaust must be slightly higher than your ES2. Just to give an idea of height the gap between the top of the silencer clamp and the underside of the kickstart spring cover is not much more than 15mm, the top seam of the silencer almost touches the pillion foot peg, and the silencer obstructs removal of the rear wheel spindle. I have always assumed that the missing corner of the stand foot was accidental damage but this photo makes me think that it may have been removed to increase the clearance.

I've posted several comments about this since yesterday but none of the has appeared yet?? Lets hope this one comes up! Ian, I fell that someone has definitely chopped a piece of your stand off. I attach )I hope) a similar view of my bike as you took of yours. You can see the difference. I think John is right when he says they've changed the exhaust pattern/Looks like I'll have to set to with a hacksaw. GeorgeAttachments norton-centre-stand-2-jpg

Before you get the hacksaw out...

It appears that your silencer sits lower and a little closer to the bike than mine. The height is set by your pipe but by modifying the silencer mount and the pipe clip to one of the front engine mount bolts (if you have one there) it might be possible to move the silencer outwards enough to create some clearance - but at the risk of interference with the kickstart.

On the other hand the clang might just add character and may not be worth worrying about. Or you could go with Hans' suggestion of a rubber buffer.

Cheers, Ian

I wondered about adjusting the silencer mount, Ian, but as the bike is fitted with a dommie gearbox (I found out after I bought it) the kickstart - which is fitted to a shorter shaft - already fouls the silencer slightly so moving the silencer further from the bike is a no-no. I like your definition of "character" but I'm going to look tomorrow at fitting some sort of buffer to either the lug or the stand to give a bit more clearance. I can't live with the rattles on the potholed roads of Cornwall. Thanks for your interest. George

Hello George i had the same problem i took the stand off and had some weld applied to the lug area . the weld was over done so when i put it back on the bike i could file it to the desired level so it didn't catch the exhaust.my bike is not as standard as yours but still the same fix. i would fit a new spring if its bouncing up and down anyway. Thanks Baz. I'll try the buffer bit first simply cos it's easier. The weld idea is certainly a more permanent solution and my local garage could probably do it. Renewing the spring is a must as I know it's a bit slack by the lazy way the stand returns. I think there is another thread on fitting the spring. Thanks for your input. George
