Carb query...

Forums

It's not a major problem, but why wont my bike- 1950 ES2, 276 carb nearly new- tick over when the bike is on the side stand?

I rarely need it running in those circumstances, it's just a bit perplexing. As soon as i lean it onto the side stand it starts to die but does respond to the throttle.

What do you think?

It sounds like the float level or the float is sticking. Check to see if the clip has let the float slip.

Or the obvious not enough petrol in the tank and you're only using the right hand tap :)

Thanks for your suggestions Dave but

the engine starts to slow and then stops immediately the bike is leant over, not what I'd expect if it was the float. Full tank of petrol.

But I will strip the float bowl for a look-see.

I was thinking, If the float level was lower than it should be so there will be less fuel in the bowl, when the bike is lent to the left, this would starve the main carb body of fuel, as the body is on the right hand side, and now in a higher position.

Maybe you could unscrew the bowl lid and see what level the fuel is, then lean the bike onto the sidestand and see how the level relates to the main body.
