Big4 ES2 500T special 1951 - chaincase advice required

Forums

Good evening.

I have been a member previously ( about 11 years ago ) but ceased when I dismantled my Norton. I am putting it back together now but having lost a chunk of parts, not worked on it for 11 years and many existing parts were so bad that I am having to source and manufacture quite a few items, there are a few areas that have the better of me.

The chaincase has been a bitch to fit ( I am pretty experienced with difficult jobs but this has tried my patience ) but having fitted it ( and using a few choice words about whoever designed this lash-up ) I find that there are parts that I have lost ( how a pair of mudguards, handlebars, offside engine-gearbox plate and a load of fittings go missing begs a question : "Did the tinkers relieve me of these?" ).

I have a fairly large library and have info on lots of Nortons but can I find a reference with visual details of the parts for the chaincase? "No".

Can I find any reference on the internet regarding fitting and fittings? "No".

Is there anyone out there who is reading this and thinking that I am making a fuss about nothing? "Yes?" Then please will you impart some of your wisdom in my direction?

There is a small collection of pictures on Flickr. Click on the image and you should be taken there.

Thanking you all in anticipation!

Hi Kim,

From the picture it looks like you have the wrong inner primary chaincase. It looks very like one for a twin as the bolt hole does not line up on the engine plus the large opening which is what hints at that ancestry to me anyway.

When I too the inner cover off my Model 7 the engine sprocket stayedas thehole was large enough to allow thisbut on my ES2 I had to take it off to remove the inner chaincase.

Thanks Jim.

I have been attempting to respond since Sunday but IE9 issues got in the way.

Things are much clearer now ( gone from black to muddy - thanks to your observation ). I am dealing with a 51 Big4, 55 engine-gearbox plates and therefor footrest components plus an incorrect chaincase.

Whilst I have sent an enquiry to Norvil to see if they have any of the primary drive-side plate components I have cracked on with starting again. All dissembled and gearbox now fitted ( new bolts made and part way through making an adjuster assembly ).

I will modify the chaincase brackets so that the chaincase can become a plant-on after, then I can look at making a new primary drive-side plate to suit - assuming that Norvil don't have any parts plus all of the seals.
