Armours exhausts

Forums

Hello i have just had a fit of my new front pipes and silencers on my jubilee, i seem to have a problem with a alignment issue on the left hand side pipe, when fitted the front pipe is only about 10mm, has anyone else had this problem with new pipes, i think i can sort it out by drilling a small grub screw near the end of the flange togo through the head and hold it in if needed, any help appreciated.

Sadly there have been similar complaints regarding their pipes for other models so I have crossed them off my list of preferred suppliers. If your saying the pipe is too short and only inserts 10mm into the head (not clear from your wording) I don't think a grub screw will help seal it against the exhaust gas pressure. I would take it or send it back as "not fit for purpose" otherwise you are just ending up with a botch job.

The more people accept substandard goods, the worse it will get - see other threads on this forum. We seriously have to stamp out the "take it or leave it" attitude that some suppliers seem to have. Substandard parts are NOT "better than nothing"!

Cheers, Lionel

I read Kelvin's note earlier and was tempted to write something similar to Lionel's reply. If a part does not fit then it is not of merchantible quality and one should contact the supplier. I would expect replacement parts that do fit or arefund. The refund will probably not include the cost of p&p however.

I am always surprised when somebody in receipt of poor fitting parts seems to accept it as a challenge and part of classic bike ownership, to have to modify the component so that it does fit.

I wonder if they were to purchase trousers where one leg was longer than the other would they happily get out the needle and thread?

stand up for your rights, or you'll get trodden on,

Simon.

My 6p worth .....

Armours provided me with a 500T exhaust that was so far from the original shape it was unbelievable. It was apparently based on an example from a renowned American collector of Nortons. Very nice except that it didn't fit, by a mile. I sent them comprehensive photographic evidence of their error but I don't know if they changed the design. 500T owners - if buying, check firstly that they have taken out the kink in the last 4" of the pipe.

On the positive side, they behaved in exemplary fashion when it came to refunding my money.

I understand that since then (quite a while ago), there has been a change of ownership and maybe with that an improvement in specifications. I would be interested to hear if anyone has some positive comments to make on the fitment of their products. If they have sorted out their well known problems of the past then then it's only fair that we let that be known.

I would still recommend purchasing unchromed exhausts and silencers though and I support the concept of keeping our suppliers on their toes as regards suitability for purpose.

In the 32 years that I have owned my 1961 Slimline framed Model 50, I have bought 3 exhaust pipes from Armours, AND ALL HAVE BEEN WRONG! I always order by part number from the parts book and they send me the pipe for a Wideline unit and not the Slimline unit as ordered. This is very frustrating as being in the States the cost to return the incorrect pipes is almost the same as the initial purchase price.

As to quality; every pipe that I have gotten from them has broken at the flange after a very short running time. I believe that the material is too thin and it has not been annealed after the forming.

I am now waiting for a new, and hopefully correct, pipe from Feked. When I get it I will make a report on my observations.

I have used Armours extensively over the years and had good service. The one exception was an exhaust pipe for a BSA some years ago which when fitted to the head the end trailed on the ground. Armours were pretty grumpy and unbelieving when I complained but did eventually replace the pipe with a correctly fitting one. As I said, that was a few years ago so things may well have changed. I suspect that for fairly common pipes they are good and for unusual pipes at least they are there. Gordon.

Hello all, since posting this I have had a bit more time in the garage, I now have the front pipes fitting a bit better, the ones that were removed didn't sit more than 20mm in the heads so the new ones will be okay. I can see you point of making a complaint but if I was to send the incorrect fitting parts back I would be left with half a bike. Every pattern part I have had had always needed something altered to fit correctly. The worst part I ever had was a bantam d1 mudguard from bantam John, I might as well have cut up an oil drum. On a good point r k leighton have done a superb job of my seat, this also doesn't fit the bike to well and was bought from the noc so if these parts are incorrect what can you expect.

Bantam John - don't start me off - Triumph not Norton - but impressively bad service - never again.

PS - I'd hope the guy (Bantam John) sees this post, but he has no computer, as he told me, so I had to print a photo and send the shot of the poor fitting of his pipes - and take the abuse when I returned them - maybe a mate can show him this post - I'll stop now.

Reagrds - again - Paul.

R K Leighton was no better when he supplied me with a BSA dual seat with incorrect fittings - his attitude? I know what I am talking about, you don't. I still have the seat, it still doesn't fit. I just didn't have the energy to fight. I'll just make up some appropriate brackets and shop elsewhere in future. Gordon.
