Andre steering damper for International

Forums

Hi

I am looking for an Andre steering damper for my 30's inter. Any condition is fine as I can overhaul it if needed. Failing that, I have seen mention of them being reproduced, if so, does anyone know where I can get one of these?

Thanks in advance

Andy

Hello Andy,

I purchaseda very good quality, reproductionAndre damper (suitable for 1930-50 Nortons) from Cornucopia enterprises based in Germany, here isa link to theirwebsite, the damper can be found on page 6 of their main catalogue:

http://www.cornucopia-enterprises.de/indey.html

I purchased mine in 2009 the price then was £145, I've attached a picture of the damper fitted to my 1949 Model 30 International.

Hope this helps.

Best Regards,Karl.

Thanks for that. It looks like they have a lot of parts for sale in there.

How does the streering damper fit to the frame on your bike? My frame doesnt apear to have any form of lug or anything to fix it to.

Hello Andy,

On my 1949 Plunger International there are two cylindrical mounts that are part of the headstock casting, the curved damper arm/bracket locates between the pair and is held in place with a through bolt,I would presume your girder/rigid Inter would have a similar casting? I have attached an image of my 49 Inter you can just make out the casting location.

Best Regards,Karl.

Thanks for that. Mine doesnt have anything for the steering damper on the frame. Once I have the damper I can probably braise some lugs on, or make a clamp to go round the frame.

I have picked up a front hub today with the brake drum and plate. I am still looking for another hub (the detachable type) and a rear brake drum with sprocket. Alternatively a one piece front hub for an ES2 (these are the forks I have, just to confuse things a bit more) and a rear brake drum to go on the hub I already have. Once I have these bits I can look at getting some wheels built up and head towards a rolling chasis! Anyone who knows of any of these bits available I would apreciate the heads up.

Thanks again for the help with the steering damper!

Hi Andy a very interesting project you, regarding the Andre steering damper early cammy Norton's have the anchor strap attached to the top of the petrol tank by a stud yours may have been cut off as mine was, if you email me on sandford1978@aol I will send you a photo .

Hi.

The plunger frame should have mountings for the anchor strap just behind the top steering bearing.

Thanks for that. We have made a bracket very similar to that to braise on. I think my bike should have the mounting on the tank (1934), but although we haven't stripped the tank yet, I would rather not have any more strain on it than needed so I will stick to the mountings under the headstock.

Does that mounting fit inside the cuttout in the tank? Or does the tank fit up underneath it? I need to make my tank mounting brackets, and have no seat at the moment, so am free to move things about and make them fit...

Hi.

Here's another pic of that mounting. It's 2 inches wide with an inch gap for the strap - Stu Rogers does them. It takes a 5/16" bolt

I found this contact when Googling for Andre dampers a while ago. Does anyone know if they are the same as the Cornucopia ones or, possibly, the UK source? Details came from a Scott website. The entry reads as follows:

Barry Jackson, 11 Binstead Close, Hampden Park, Eastbourne, BN22 9RT.

Repro' Andrew Steering Dampers for Scott forks, some Webb type.

Also does girder fork repairs, but not retubing.

The tank on my Inter bitza is almost certainly a pre-war one and has the bolt on top for such a damper with a strap to it. It also needs one! Club to stock???

From what I have seen, the only difference between the varios Andre Dampers is the method of clamping it to the frame/tank. The bulk of it looks the same on all of them. There could however be different diameters for the section that clamps inside the forks depending on the forks it is being fitted to? But as far as I know they seem the same apart from the clamp.
