Am I asking too much?

Forums

when I go onto Andover Norton or the RGM site I find an exploded view of the machines and part no's, well mostly, I don't find this facility on the Norvil site so I asked as follows

'hello chaps, does your site have an exploded view catologue in order to I/D parts pse?

reply

'no sorry but we do sell parts lists depending on what bike you have'

probably the most unhelpful reply I have received other than when a question is asked of a 'westminster weasel'

guess I will stay with the other tow I mention.

kind regards

Considering he recently cost the NOC £600 paid for legal advice on carrying ads including the word 'Commando' the club should have no more dealings with his company. The reason he objected to Commando is that Norvil has registered Commando as a trademark, this is known as a pirate trademarking.

Hi Richard

Joe Seifert's new Andover Norton website builds on their previous "exploded view" user experience to good effect and I agree that it's very helpful. Joe made it clear however that programming the system was a huge piece of work and one which no web developer would take on lightly!

Should a member wish to take on such a project on behalf of the club's spares operation perhaps they could contact us!!?

The Andover Norton site is by far the best, with RGM's a fair second, and Norvil's trailing badly in third.

There's absolutely no need to pay money to get a great of Norton (and other) documentation -- a web search for "norton commando parts list pdf" will bring up many leads. In particular, http://www.classicbike.biz/Norton/Norton.htm seems a good source.

Take care, however; some results are sites that are basically trolling to trick/scare you into downloading alleged anti-virus/clean-up software; a case in point appears to behttp://pdfmotomanual.com

Peter, it shouldn't take long to add NOC spares available to an exploded diagram of a 50's single.

At least Roger at RGM is making an effort to produce non available parts, regardless of commercial viability. (Called providing a service)

I would be more minded to use a supplier who was most likely to have what I wanted, a one stop shop.

Something to think about!

thanks for the suggestions, I have trolled these sites but the 1968 book doesn't refer to the '68 commando, 'tis not engine parts I seek but cycle construction, spacers etc and where things like the rear no plate mounts, I can circumvent these points in the main but it would be nice to have some thing to refer to. kind regards

After working on BSA and having some wonderfull illustrations to refer to, I really struggled with my basket case 99. I have fantastic information on early Ducati although the bikes are a rarity in this country. I was really dissapointed with the Norton literature ,perhaps things are now looking up?. Remember " There should be no problems with dissmantling ,and reassembly is just a reversal of the process"!!.

The prewar parts lists were far better in that they had illustrations of nearly everything. Unfortunately the quality of the pictures is nowhere near modern standards, and they don't show how things go together.

Bacon's 'Norton Twins Restoration' has lots of photos of all sorts of odd aspects of the twins. But although I'm gathering as many photos of other owner's Nortons as I can, I still find that the detail I really want to see is almost never there...especially cycle parts (which are often not original anyway...)

We don't have an image library on this site, even though lots of us have posted photos for years so a search might well turn up what we need.

I replied to the statement from Norvil in the vein that the assistance was akin to that which a rope gives a hanging man, and to be fair I have received a conciliatory reply from 'Jan' who I'm pretty sure I have spoken to before and has been more obliging, however surely retail businesses do not need discussion such as this on a site dedicated and full of enthusiasts for the particular products which the firm markets and specialises in'tis such a shame that some people cannot see any further than the end of their nose! kind regards

Hi Richard,

I am interested in what you would have considered a helpful answer. They do not have an exploded view catalogue (neither does RGM) so the answer is correct. They offered to provide a parts list for your motorcycle to enable you to identify the part number.

What answer would have satisfied you ?

Regards

Tony

Just stumbled across this thread, &at the risk of being contentious, I'm struggling to see the issue here! A parts book is about£15 for any Commando. Areweso lazy now that we can't be arsed to look up a spare part on paper beforecontactingour chosen supplier? (or are we justtoo tight to buy a parts book, ffs!)

Don't forget that the parts book is also an aidto dis/re-assembly- my garage wall is covered in scans from the Catalog & Workshop Manual when undertaking any major work (also avoids greasy fingerprints on the master)

Ihave my own reasons for not using Norvil, lack of an interactive parts list isn't one of them.

recently I asked advice about the fitting of a longrange fastback tank and was advised in relation to using the rubber pads from a later machine, I went onto the Andover site and blow me, perhaps I imagined that I was viewing a selection of tanks and their mountings together with part numbers and a subsequent illustration and price. I did a similar thing on the RGM site and whadda you know? I must have imagined the same thing.

From Norvil I have received a quite concilitory reply from 'Jan' with whom I am sure I have spoken before and has been helpful and obliging, she does state that I did not refer to any particular model which really is academic as they don't have an exploded view on the site of any.

they can supply a ' parts supplement' for my machine I probably have got a parts book for it somewhere but if I recall 'twasn't of much use as the bike left the factory in June 1968 and many minor original details are not included.

kind regards

Are the RGM part numbers no good for the Norvil parts? I don't see the problem. Maybe you should use a browser that has tabs and you can open RGM (or Andover) in one tab, Norvil in another and click back and forth to do your ordering. Get a teenager to show you how to do this. There is no way for Norvil to know you are cheating.

Why bother with Norvil if you can get better service from Andover Norton and RGM and they are nicer people in my experience.
